International Network in Advanced Theological Education
The vision of International Network in Advanced Theological Education (established in 1997) is to contribute to a theological education and reflection which is globally oriented, cross-cultural and ecumenical, at the same time as it is attentive to the concrete needs and challenges that are presented to it by the local context.
Theological institutions in Brazil, South Africa, India, China, Hungary, Norway, Costa Rica and Canada are co-operating through the mutual exchange of students at advanced level (Master's and PhD), through development of curricula for a globally oriented contextual theology, and through research and information exchange. The network promotes and facilitates interchange in all directions: North-South, South-South, South-North, giving mutuality and equality high priority. The Network is based on the principle of mutual trust and confidence between the participating higher education institutions. It is hoped that this co-operation may represent a new and feasible model for global relationships within advanced theological education.
The Student Exchange Programme
Each institution will be invited to send up to two students (under the network quota) for studies at one of the other Network institutions each year. This number may vary according to interests, needs and available funding.
In the selection of candidates for exchange the Network will take into account the concerns of gender justice as well as ecumenical, social and cultural inclusiveness.
The responsibility for the selection and organizing of the exchange lies with the co-ordinating institution and its local co-ordinator, whereas practicalities relating to each exchange will be arranged bilaterally between home and host institutions.
The Network aims to finance travel costs for the exchange students. For this purpose a Network Exchange Fund has been established. However, the participating institutions commit themselves first to seeking other funding, where available. Study fees, living costs and other costs will normally be sought to be covered within the principle of mutual hospitality between the network institutions, or by alternative arrangements. Where this turns out to be difficult, however, financial support for living costs and other needs may also be sought from the Network.
